Catch-up Strategy For the Philippines
(My homework for my Management of Technology class, passed to Dr. Culaba, my professor)
As we have discussed in Management of technology class, Korea has resurrected its dying economy from sixth of the world’s poorest to the worlds’ leader in memory semiconductor and LCD technology. The miracle was made possible by having five cath-up strategies focusing on research and development in technology. I believe the pearl of the orient seas can also redeem itself through catch-up strategies I have in mind.
If the Philippines wanted to receive the same grace, first, the government must provide more funds to research and development. Learning that the actual fund of the country is way below the ideal level. Second, Filipinos must be more confident in their own work. This can be done through the governments’ support and the media. Filipinos are fond of gossips and news about non-sense shown by the media. So why not publicize and talk about great Filipino inventions rather than sex scandals and other non-sense? This way, people would be more interested in using new technology made by Filipinos. Third, educate people of the new technology, its benefits and its proper use. Filipinos are quite traditional and stagnant. Most old Filipinos look at technology as a bad thing and a destroyer of the culture, environment and traditions. We must learn to be open minded of the things that might help not just a few people but the whole country as well. Fourth, develop our own technology to save the environment. Compared to other countries, Philippines is an archipelago rich in natural resources. It is just a sad truth that some of them has already been exploited. But through technology, I believe that they can still be restored. If that happens, the country will not just earn from the technology but will promote tourism as well. Hospitable Filipinos plus a place full of natural resources would surely be a great place to stay. Lastly, develop our own technology on renewable source of energy, especially solar energy and hydropower. The government must invest on projects like these since Philippines is has a tropical climate and an archipelago. I belive that utilizing these characteristics could give the country an edge on the world.
Philippines’ hidden wealth is on its people. Filipinos are hospitable, cheerful and family oriented people. We can be happy with our hungry stomachs and I’m sure that we would be happier in a wealthier setting. Leave new warfare technologies to the US. We should care more about our people and develop technology to make their lives well. Appreciate them, support them and help them live safe and contented with their families.
